Author Spotlight with Juli D. Revezzo

Hey everyone! We would like to welcome Author Juli D. Revezzo as our Spotlight Author!! We have an interview and cover with synopsis. The book sounds good. So let's get started.




Tell me about your book. How did you come up with that (story, angle, idea)?


A friend of mine and I challenged each other to write a collection of stories for the Holidays. That inspired the earliest version of The Artist's Inheritance. I'd been reading the Mabinogion (a collection of Welsh mythological tales) and wondered how a modern man and woman might react if the gods came asking that they live up to a familial agreement.


What kind of research did you do for this book?
Aside from reading and re-reading the Mabinogion, the civil war era fort in Pensacola, Florida figures in. I read everything I could find online about it, and also I have friends who study the Civil war. Whenever I hit a snag in my research into the Battle of Fort Pickens, I'd send them off cries for help.


What's a typical working day like for you? When and where do you write? Do you set a daily writing goal?

I try to do most of my writing throughout the day. The best time to get ideas down is usually first thing in the morning, then I pick at the scenes the ideas present throughout the day. I struggle with carpal tunnel now and then, so I figure if I can get at least 500 words out, it's a good day.  I usually try to top it but not go too far over 1500, 2000 sometimes incapacitates me.



What is the hardest part of writing for you?
It differs from manuscript to manuscript. Sometimes it's just getting past chapter three, sometimes it's the self-doubt that creeps in. Sometimes it's *shudders* dealing with edits.

What’s the best thing about being an author?

Being able to create a story that makes me happy.


What makes your book different from others in this genre?

I tend to try to remain respectful of the Otherworld, when I approach it in my stories, even when I'm making their creatures the bad guys. So many times paranormal authors make the ...well, paranormal creatures out to be the bad guys just for the sake of it, and don't realize or understand the mythology they're stepping in. It's almost as if "because it's not my mythology I can do whatever I want with it." I find that distasteful so I try not to emulate it. I have friends who are pagans, and so I've read a bunch of their stuff over the years and they'd probably beat me with wet noodles if I did anything less. ;).


Are any of your characters like you?
Caitlin, I think, though truth to tell I am not as good a gardener as she.


 If you were writing a book about your life, what would the title be?
Murphy's Law, no doubt. *laughs*


What paranormal creature would you be if you could?
A fairy or a were of some kind I think.


When and why did you begin writing?
Oh, when I was a child. I wrote my first story about a fairy princess who decided to have her wedding in my front yard if I'm not mistaken. Why? Telling stories just always came naturally so, finally putting them down on paper seemed the next logical step.

What do you do when your not writing?

I read a lot, fiction, non-fiction, just whatever strikes me at the time so it's my first go to for relaxation. I also enjoy movies, from SciFi to romantic comedies and some (emphasis on some) horror movies if I'm in the mood. 


What is the first book you remember reading?

Mom had me reading for as long as I can remember, Little Women, Nancy Drew and things like that. The first that I chose? Probably Elric of Melniboné by Michael Moorcock.

Coffee or soda
Both, though starting the day with coffee is a preference.

summer or winter
Winter, as it gets us past hurricane season. Worst darned time of the year, sometimes.

Demon or angel
Angels. They're just nicer.

Car or truck
I have a car, so I could say car, but man, sometimes it would be nice to have a pickup.


Cabin in the woods or condo on the beach
Cabin in the woods, I think. So long as Jason's not on the loose. ;)

About the Author
I started my obsession with reading at an early age, getting in trouble for sneaking BabySitter 
Club and Nancy Drew books into math class in elementary school. I would read any fiction book 
I could get my hands on. I knew it was an addiction when instead of grounding me from TV or 
music, my mom would take away my books as punishment (The Horror!). My love of all things 
paranormal was inspired by my good friend Laurie, who convinced me that books with vampires, 
witches, and all things shifter were amazing. After a little reluctance, I gave it a shot with the 
Sookie Stackhouse books, realized she was right, and the rest was history.
I grew up in Pittsburgh, graduated from The University of Pittsburgh with my degree in English, 
and taught 8th graders to love reading as much as I do for several years. I will always be a proud 
member of the Steelers Nation, but I couldn't take the cold and moved my frozen tush to Florida 
where I now live with my family and two cats. You will find me now with my trusty Kindle in 
hand and toes in the sand!

As soon as my bedroom door closes, Rolf swings me around and backs me up against the door,
his entire length to mine. He slides his arm around my waist, pulling me closer. He leans down, 
pressing his lips on my forehead. “Your dad doesn’t trust me.” 
I slide my hands up his firm chest and slip them around his neck, tangling my fingers with the 
silky-soft hair curling on his collar. “I don’t think my dad trusts any boy in my room.”
He chuckles, his warm breath caressing the shell of my ear. “Good thing he doesn’t.” His voice 
is hoarse, tossing away any decent thoughts from my mind. “I’ve missed you.” My knees barely 
hold me up as his lips trail my jaw, in a slow torturous pace. His arms tighten around me, 
melding us together. Hiking to my toes, I push my body forward until all that surrounds me is his 
light sandalwood aftershave.
“Missed you—” His mouth covers mine, cutting me off. Every sound inside the flat fades. 
Everything in me veers forward, focusing on him, on his lips on mine, not caring that my parents 
could walk in on us, or my siblings down the hallway could barge in. His hands travel down the 
hem of my t-shirt, and under it, wrap around my waist and soon his fingertips whisper into my 
skin. And I’m burning. They hike farther up. Every nerve in my body narrows to his fingers. I’m 
sure if he stops, my body will shatter into millions of worthless pieces. And when they do move 
up to trace the outer line of my lace bra, my body trembles with the promise of combusting. A 
whimper bubbles up my throat, and I push myself further into him. If only I could get under his 
skin, then we could be one. He groans low as he pushes me against the door seeming as desperate as I am. I tighten my hold on him at the same time fumble awkwardly with his shirt 
searching for the path to his skin. As soon as my fingers touch his skin, his whole body trembles. 
He lifts his mouth from mine, then buries his face in the crook of my neck, breathing hard. I 
clutch him closer, tighter, my breath mirroring his.
“Kissing you has got to be the most pleasurable thing in the world, Ana.” His voice is still rough, 
his breath deliciously warm on the nape of my neck. I couldn’t agree more. I mean about kissing 
him.

Laura: What type of books do you read?
Teresa: I usually read YA or romance. I still love anything that gives you goosebumps though! I guess a little of everything!

Laura: Could you tell us about yourself and your writing? 
Teresa: Oh jeez! LOL. I hate talking about myself Well, my writing: I try putting myself into the story. I love detail, and want the reader swept away with all senses. Sight, sound, smell, taste, touch. I want you to be in the story.

Laura: How did you come up with Pyramid of the Moon? 
Teresa: I've always loved mythology. I want to write about myths and folklore that you maybe haven't read about before.

Laura: How would you describe Pyramid of the Moon?
Teresa: I would describe Pyramid of the Moon as a little of everything. It has romance, mystery, action. I try adding a bit of everything without over doing it

Laura: Are your characters inspired by anyone you know?
Teresa: Not really based on anyone specific. I picked names I've always liked though. Like Eva, I wanted that to be my name when I got older. And Colton, Baret, Rhys...sexy guy names!

Teresa: LOL. I have a short story out on Amzon called "Black Widow Rose" It's not edited professionally, and I basically wrote it for fun. It was a personal goal.

Laura: How do you come up with the plots? Do they write themselves, do you use an outline? How do you work on the plots?
Teresa: I never do an outline, because the story never stays on course!!! Sometimes, the characters write themselves!! LOL.

This is a brilliant first novel for this debut author.

What an amazing story! From beginning to end Pyramid of the Moon takes you on an incredible journey. The characters just as exciting, from the moment you meet Eva you know right away that she is no ordinary teenage girl no matter how hard she tries. I became so captivated by her that felt her power and her struggles. I felt as though I was in her shadow through out the story.
As much as I would love to go over every detail of this book I can not. I won't spoil it for any who have not read it yet. I will tell you that this is one book that I recommend if you are even slightly interested in YA Fantasy. Pyramid of the Moon is everything it promises and more. I am so taken in by the power it possess that I have read it twice just to make sure I caught every detail, that and I am desperate for the next in the series.
My praises go out to Teresa Smith as she has written a very powerful book here. So if You want to get caught up in some ancient power and a little romance I highly recommend you go pick up a copy and soon!

I was given the opportunity to receive an advance copy of this book from the author to read and give an honest review. Honestly, I have to say...this book is fantastic! The very first chapter reeled me in with curiosity. The author is very detailed in her words, she creates a virtual movie in your mind with the description of each aspect of the story right down to the clothes the characters are wearing. One scene was so descriptive, I had to put the book down for a moment to recover from the creep factor of it! The characters are well developed, yet have an air of mystery about them. You can feel Eva's emotions as she burns with desire for her love, the heat between the two is immense! Colton makes you swoon and jump for joy any time he is involved in a scene. Baret's snarky comments are comic relief. Both men are wonderfully written and sound like the perfect set of male companions for any girl to have in their life. The story gives you enough background to peak your interest, but still leaves questions unanswered that make you anxious for the next book. The ending had me searching my Kindle for the rest of the book because I wanted to know what was going to happen next! My only complaint, it ended too soon, I want more! Looking forward to Book 2 of this series!

This is one of those books that can make or break your resolve to sleep. It is extremely well written and intelligent! That's the difference between this novel and some others that I have run across. This one has the action, of course, but the intelligence of the characters, and the author, is evident when you crack the book open.
Eva's life has taken a turn for the...well...the crazy. Everything changes so quickly for her, especially when she begins to feel this undeniable connection with super hottie Colton. There's also his brother, but that's more a brother/sister thing going on. Eva finds out that she has the Moon Goddess within her. Literally.
Now, I refuse, REFUSE!, to give away too many details. There's no way that I can sum up this book in such a short time. For now, just know this: the mythology, lore, and back story that is expertly weaved within these pages will keep you strapped to your seat. If you are a fan of action, a wee bit of romance, and some truly evil people, well...this is the book for you. As I said, EXCELLENT book! This is one of those that you seriously don't want to miss out on.
From the moment that I began reading this book I was utterly speechless. There is that air of mystery and intrigue that readers love, but there was something else; something more. This is not one of those cookie cutter books that have the tried and true love triangle and angst filled teen girl. This is a mature book written by a woman who really knows how to spin a tale. There is no other way to say it but this is one of those books that will stay in your head until it drives you mad waiting for the next one!
I love the mythology that surrounds the story and the detail in which the author brings to life a world that is so close to our own, and yet different. The female protagonist, Eva, is head strong and vibrant, never dull and annoying. There is no comparison to other books in this genre. Her male leads are opposite of each other and yet compliment each other extremely well. The cast of characters work well together and help the story progress throughout the book.
I would definitely recommend this book to everyone, simply because of the unique story line and different plot lines. Also, the wording isn't lessened just to draw in other readers. There is an air of intelligence within this book that you won't find in a lot of YA books. You're doing yourself a favor by picking this one up! I'm sure you'll love it as much as I did!

What can I say. Words escape me. The characters, the plot, the intensity, the dynamic scenes, just everything about this book will hold your attention which is important to me. From beginning to end I was just lost in the characters and their moments. It's different, it's fast going, and it left me demanding book 2 lol. I am being selfish and demanding book 2 from the author. I will be following Teresa Smith for now on. She did a great job with description of every detail. You won't go wrong reading this book. It's a must read for sure.

Interview
Tell me about your book(s). How did you come up with that (story, angle, idea)?
The story had been rolling around in my head, in one form or another, for as long as I can remember. I’ve always been fascinated by the unseen, by the possibilities of what might come after this life, or what came before. I adore mythology and ancient arts and astrology – and it intrigues me how so many beliefs are similar, even across time and culture. I wanted to create a world where these things could be explored in a fun and exciting way.

What kind of research did you do for this book(s)?
I’ve been a student of spiritual studies for a long time and I hauled out some very old books while I was writing. I scoured the internet, I joined and lurked in forums, and read article after article on almost every topic imaginable. I have a Muslim character and I wore a hijab one weekend, to get a feel for what that might be like. I wanted my teen characters to be realistic, so I turned to my daughters for advice on several occasions. 

What's a typical working day like for you? When and where do you write? Do you set a daily writing goal?
When the weather is nice, I write outside. If my house is a mess, I write in the car so I’m not distracted and tempted to do other things – like laundry. 

With scheduling - I’m all over the place. I wish I could say I’m dedicated to a routine, but that’s SOOOO not me. I’m at the mercy of the muse, and some days I’ll write for 12 hours or more, and sometimes I skip an entire day or two or even three. I give myself weekly goals, not daily, but even when I’m not clicking the keys, I’m still writing in my head. The story never, ever stops!

What is the hardest part of writing for you?
Letting it go. After the sweat and tears, after the edits and re-edits, after I pass the point of no return – that scares the hell out of me. I’m never, ever completely happy with my work. I always see room for improvement. It’s a constant struggle, and the only relief is focusing on another project. 

What makes your book(s) different from others in the same genre? 
Can I be honest? I always dread this question. J It’s so hard to answer, because the last thing I want is to come off sounding as though other books are somehow lacking, because that’s not what I think at all. I love and respect Urban Fantasy, and because I love it so much, I busted my ass to create a story worthy of that label, a story that would be a positive contribution to the fantastic genre. 

To do that – especially with a story about angels – required bold moves and uncharted territory. I’ve been asked many times if my book is like Hush Hush or Angelfall or Fallen, and the answer is a resounding ‘no’. Those stories are awesome, but they’ve already been written. I didn’t want to write a rehash or knock-off, and I can’t imagine readers want that, either. 

First off, Uprising is tagged as New Adult – the content is edgy and sometimes gritty, a bit more than what you might find in most YA books. I think this book could’ve had a YA label, but the next book in the series could not and we didn’t want to do a switcheroo on readers.

I took a few risks, like starting the story in the world of angels instead of the ‘real’ world. Readers will get to explore that realm – where angels live, how they live, their purpose and how that purpose relates to mankind. They will also get a glimpse of what it’s like for human souls in that spiritual realm. I borrowed concepts from dozens of belief systems, as well as astrology and mythology. In Uprising, ideas are made flesh – readers will meet characters like Aries, Libra and Leo. (One of those has a temper, by the way)

I’m going to wrap this up but mention one last thing: Characters get their asses kicked early and often. They don’t have much time for romance, but readers might find some if they look closely. 

What advice would you give aspiring writers?
Write the book you always wanted to read. That’s old advice, but still the best. Writing is often frustrating, and at times you might feel discouraged, but if you just can’t wait to read the story, it will make those times a little less painful. 

What is your guilty pleasure?
I have so many, but this time I’ll go with bananas dipped in melted Nutella.

If you were writing a book about your life, what would the title be?
Under Construction.

Are any of your characters based on someone you know?
Not entirely, but some hold elements from people I’ve known. The character of Emory is going blind from Choroideremia, a very real and insidious disease. My friend, Cory, has this disease and was cool enough to give me some pointers on how to write the character.


If zombies attack which of your characters would you want at your side?
I’m not going to say one of the angels, because that would be too easy – wings trump teeth every time.  I’ll go with Danny. He’s a fourth-generation Marine, great with a rifle and could do some real damage!

What inspired you to write your first book?
The voices in my head. They refused to shut-up until I put them on paper.

What is the first book you remember reading?
I think it might’ve been one of the Little House on the Prairie books. I might’ve read others before that, but that’s the first I can recall.
