Pawn ARC - Review

Pawn (The Blackcoat Rebellion #1) by Aimee Carter

Blurb
YOU CAN BE A VII. IF YOU GIVE UP EVERYTHING.

For Kitty Doe, it seems like an easy choice. She can either spend her life as a III in misery, looked down upon by the higher ranks and forced to leave the people she loves, or she can become a VII and join the most powerful family in the country.

If she says yes, Kitty will be Masked—surgically transformed into Lila Hart, the Prime Minister's niece, who died under mysterious circumstances. As a member of the Hart family, she will be famous. She will be adored. And for the first time, she will matter.

There's only one catch. She must also stop the rebellion that Lila secretly fostered, the same one that got her killed and one Kitty believes in. Faced with threats, conspiracies and a life that's not her own, she must decide which path to choose—and learn how to become more than a pawn in a twisted game she's only beginning to understand.

My Review
Kitty Doe knows she has to be classed as a good number if she ever expects to get a good life. She fails in that when she is giving a 3. She is ready to do something drastic to change her odds when she is giving a chance to become the highest class there is a 7. All she has to do is get Masked and become Lila Hart, the Prime Minister's niece who has died and no one knows. She is taught how to act, speak and all about Lila Hart. She thinks it is a fair exchanged not realizing what she is in for. She is told she need to stop the rebellion that is rising, one Lila helped in secret. It is hard to do when it is everything she wants herself. The danger has just begun for Kitty and she has to see if she wants to just be a Pawn or be someone she truly wants to be.

Kitty is an amazing character. She begins her life in an orphanage and works hard to become something better. She is very smart and would have been placed better off but in these times she has a learning disability that people don't care to help her with. Even when she has been placed low she doesn't want to give up she thinks of a way out so she can stay with Benjy her boyfriend. In the new life she becomes someone she isn't but she still finds way to be herself at times. She becomes a strong person and tries her best to do the right thing. At times I don't know how she didn't break down but she doesn't she bottles it up. She will do anything to protect those she loves. Benjy is extremely smart and really loves Kitty. At times he did get on my nerves as he seemed to want to tell Kitty what to do. Even if he is doing it for good I Just didn't care for the way he acted. Know is Lila's fiance and a person you are never really sure of. He is very handsome and a mystery. He has many secrets he is hiding and you never know whether to trust him or not. There is a lot more characters in this book that all play a part.

From the beginning I got into Kitty's head easily. You get to see the world she is in and understand how it works. It was easy to connect with Kitty and feel like you were along with her on this dangerous journey. Given the chance at a better life I can see why she jumped at it. However as with anything else you never know what goes on in other people's lives. She quickly see the rich and powerful have dark secrets as well. She also learns just what Elsewhere is. That place is truly a horror. The powerful in this book have so many things going on you don't really know who to trust in this book. Everyone is telling Kitty what to do and she is torn many times not knowing for sure what to do. This book has many twist I didn't see coming and they were a delight to unfold. If you love dystopian book, books with a intrigue and mystery or just want something fantastic to read pick this one up.
