Taking on the Dead (The Famished Trilogy #1) by Annie Walls
Life for Kansas was perfect until the day the world changed.
She has been hiding out for four years in solitude. It’s the only way to survive. The only way not to draw the living dead. Helping a small group of people, she learns the new world might not be what she assumes. Venturing out of her refuge and comfort zone, she meets Rudy, who helps her find a greater purpose. She realizes that the world has moved on without her. Only it’s not what she expects. Her knowledge of the living dead grows and only makes her more curious as humanity continues to hang on by a thread. While on her search for answers she finds comfort in new friendships and love, but her past seems as if it will haunt her forever.
Kansas takes it upon herself to help other survivors, which would be easy if the famished were the only obstacles.
In a trilogy plot thick with twists and turns, this adult dark fantasy is emotional as much as it is horrifyingly gripping.
My Review
Ever since I first saw this book I wanted to read it. When I got the chance to review it for this tour I was so excited. As you may or may not know I love Zombie books! This one gets to go to a spot in my top 10 favorites as well. Kansas set up a pretty good spot for herself after the outbreak. She lives in a bunker away from everyone including the zombies. She has everything she needs for a while. That changes as she trust the wrong people. Now on the run from people and zombies she meets Rudy who helps her and takes her to a type of settlement with other people. There she makes new friends and more. She finds she has a mission and she is able to help people as well. Kansas also finds that people in other places have their own set rules and a lot of them are more dangerous than the zombies. She must find a way to help those who need it and get revenge on those who deserve it.
If you like zombie books or even if you don't you need to read this. I usually read a book really fast not in this case. I took my time with it and slowly savored it. I would read a few chapters at a time just so I could prolong it from ending. The zombies in a way are a small part of this book. Kansas strength and struggles are what you really get into. She has so much thrown at her you wonder how she keeps going. If a outbreak actually did happen I would hope I could be as strong as her. Rudy I love he is big and strong but in a way he reminds me of a teddy bear. A teddy bear that kicks ass but still makes you want to cuddle with him or at least dance with him. You get introduced to so many more characters and you never forget a single one of them. They all play their own part to make this book great. You may think all zombie books are the same. Not true here it has it's own plot and a great feel to it. I would recommend this to anyone who loves zombies, paranormal books, a story of survival, love story and so much more. I could fill this page raving about this book so I will just say read it!!! I am not so patiently waiting for the next one. Annie Walls you did a fantastic job hands with this one. 5 out of 5 bats~Pam
