Drift Author Spotlight

We are so excited to have Michael author of Drift today on the blog. Make sure you check out our page Paranormal Reads for all the quotes and teasers. Now for the interview.

When did you know you wanted to become a writer?
I knew I wanted to become a writer, for sure, when I was in a very popular, local, Dallas metal about 12-13 years ago. I wrote all the music in that band and realized that I really enjoyed it. Almost more than playing the lead guitar in that band. I knew if the band didn't take me where I wanted to go, maybe writing would.

How did the idea of Drift come to you?
The idea for Drift came to me from a fascination about the paranormal world. I've always wondered if Angels and Demons were real, and if they were, did they all truly follow the rules of all of one side is good, and all of the other is bad. Then the other thing I wondered was; if they were real, why were they here and what roles do they truly play in our world. I decided to play with that a little, and Drift is what I came up with.

Are any of your characters based off people you know?
Yes! Mark "Scruffy" Spears is based off a buddy I had in high school. He was the goofiest sucker you could ever meet and twice as uncoordinated. We called him 'Scruffy' because he always looked sleepy and he had short, thick hair that always got messed up over the course of a day. Funny dude, and I loved that guy to death. Still a great friend of mine to this day. Then Shadow the cat in the story is based off my own cat Fate.

How many books will be in the series?
5 in the series. With a potential opening for a 6th. But more than likely, just 5.

How do you over come writer’s block?
I've never had writers block, so I don't know. My mind is always moving so I don't get how people can even get writer's block lol.

What is your writing process?
My writing process consists of me, my laptop on my lap, on my couch, empty house, cat in my lap, drink within reach. That's pretty much every session.

What is your favorite paranormal being?
I'd have to say it's a toss up between Demons and Angels.

What was the first paranormal book you read?
When I was a kid, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. If that even counts as one lol. First real one, Stephen Kings Pet Cemetary.

Who are some of your favorite authors?
Stephen King, J.K. Rowling, P.C. Cast, etc...

Can you give us any hints about Drift?
Hints about Drift...stay patient in the beginning, because after a modest start, it becomes a non-stop, action packed, emotional roller coaster. Oh yeah, keep an eye on Shadow too.

Stephen King wrote that he wished people would more ask him about the craft of writing. What question do you wish that an interviewer would ask you?
What question do I wish a reader would ask me? How about, why is the publishing business still doing business likes it 50 years ago? One thing I realized in the business already in the early stages is that agents and publishers are still doing things like it's the 20th century. Society has changed, the publishing industry needs to adapt. I want to see more of our youth being obsessed readers and the publishing industry needs to also cater to them so they can grow up and have children that become book lovers along with their TV. Hopefully my agent and publisher won't eat me for that lol. I love them!! lol

Is there a writer or writers that inspire you?
Yes there are writers that inspire me, of course and I really like composers of music. To me, it is stories being told in a visual sense. So my answer is, I have too many to name lol.

If you were stranded on a deserted island what character would you want with you and why?
Haha, my own character (Yes, I'm being a little self centered) Leo! He could fly my butt off that island.

What would you do in a zombie apocalypse?
Surround Justin Bieber with treadmills and enjoy the show.

What 3 people would you like to have dinner with and why?
President John F. Kennedy, because I would like to thank him for being a truly humane leader. James Hetfield (Metallica), because he's an awesome writer and composer and I would like to pick his brain. Helen of Troy, because I'd want to see what all the fuss was about.

Mike lives just outside of Dallas Texas with his cats and fiancee of 10 years. He is a small business owner who spends his free time playing lead guitar and helping out his fiancee, in whatever way he can, get through medical school. While writing and playing guitar for a heavy metal band that he created in his younger days, his passion for story telling began to take hold. He has a strong desire for travel, loves animals, and enjoys doing anything outdoors.

Thank you Michael for letting me and the fans interview today. All of us ladies at Paranormal Reads are excited for the release of Drift.
