5) Salem’s Lot-One of my first introductions to horror

4) Saw (The first one) Great twist

2) Resident Evil- I love the whole series!

1) Halloween (The original) I watch this every year, and it never gets old. Plus, I can remember my older siblings going to see it. I saw the movie ad in the paper and was so upset I wasn’t allowed to go!

Interview with Suza Kates
Where so you get the ideas for your books?

All over the place, honestly. I usually start with my own idea of a fantasy location, a place I’d like to visit or would find scary. Then the parts and pieces just fly from different directions. I don’t know where most of it comes from!

How long does it usually take you to get the first draft done for a book?

Hmm...I usually edit a lot as I go along, so the first draft can take anywhere from 30-60 days. I’ve recently tried a fast draft that is supposed to take only two weeks, but I can’t help editing some as I go, making it closer to 4 weeks. So I guess 30 days on average.

What are you currently working on?

The savannah Coven Series. I’m down to the final 3 books and won’t be writing any stand-alones until all of the witches’ books are completed. Plus, I’m so attached to the coven women, and I want to make sure the final stories wrap up all loose ends.

If you could co write a book with any author who would it be?

I’ve recently discovered Julie Kagawa and her book “The Immortal Rules.” Wow. Would I love to go on an adventure with her!

What is your favorite thing about the paranormal world?

The freedom to write whatever you can imagine. If I think a demon will fit into a story, or a ghost, anything goes as long as it adds to the overall plot.

If you could be any paranormal creature what would you be?

Honestly, I would be a witch. But I also really love the elemental assassin powers in Jenifer Estep’s series. Who knew you could do so many killer things with ice?

Is there anything you wish to say to your readers?

I can’t thank my readers enough for their support. When I started the Savannah Coven Series, I was still pretty much a novice. But the readers latched onto the very things that I love about the characters, and they are always willing to give e feedback on every story. I try to have lots of giveaways to thank them in a real way too!

What is the first book you remember reading?

The first I remember reading is Helen Keller. I remember because it was the first book I read all the way through without stopping. In fact, I can still see my little white frilly lamp and pink bed covers. I was about nine and felt like such an adult for reading a whole book in one lazy afternoon.

Book 7 of The Savannah Coven Releases October 20th! "Suffering of a Witch"

Bio
I can’t remember a time when I didn’t love books, but two particular memories stay with me. As a young girl I picked up Little Women, read it straight through, and promptly turned to page one to start all over again. The next book I did that with was Mind Hunter by John Douglas, tales about profiling serial killers.

Thus a twisted romantic was born.

Throughout my teenage and young adult years, I read everything from horror to historical romance, yet I never, ever thought of trying to write anything of my own. Write a whole book? Crazy talk.

Then I spent a long, cold winter in a tiny apartment in Germany. My bed was also my living room couch, and I shared it with three cats. After tearing through all the books I had that were written in English, I picked up a pen and opened a door to something I would never have expected to love.

Missing the warmth, the hospitality, and the food of the South, I wrote about those things with a huge dose of family thrown in. I still have a sweet spot in my heart for Southern Moon, but to date, I have not revisited it for submission to my publisher. Time will tell.

As a huge fan of Dan Brown and Nora Roberts, I set off to write a romantic suspense with tons of history-laden backdrops. The She Trilogy is still a work in progress, but only because it was bumped aside by a bunch of sassy witches.

I had an idea about sisters and magic and went to work on the first book of The Savannah Coven Series, Whisper of a Witch. The series is still going strong, and I am grateful every day that I took a chance on paranormal romance, a genre I wasn’t very familiar with and had never actually read before writing it. Now I’m a parajunkie.

I have since joined RWA, and I can’t say enough about this organization. The education and support are unparalleled. I want to say thank you to all of my fellow writers who have offered advice and to my fans who come back for more.
